Sophia Forum 101 (Full year)
The purpose of this course is to develop the critical thinking and writing skills of high school students
through the engagement of certain key themes in the history of Western thought. We will examine these
themes through the lenses of the various disciplines of the Humanities, stressing especially, Literature,
Philosophy, Theology, History, and the Arts. Through lectures, readings, class discussions, argumentative
essays, film screenings, etc., we will learn to think well and enjoy doing it. Sophia Forum 101 especially
focuses on Faith & Reason and the various arguments for the existence of God, from the ancient period
to the present. Furthermore, we will study English etymology through daily Latin and Greek vocabulary
exercises. The following texts are required for purchase:
*Spielvogel, Jackson. Western Civilization: A Brief History (Comprehensive Volume), Second edition.
Stamford: Wadsworth, 2002.
*Ayers, Donald. English Words from Latin and Greek Elements. University of Arizona Press; 2nd edition.
(In addition, there will be numerous handouts and required texts for each semseter.)
The cost of the course is $76 per month for nine months plus a $50 registration fee.

Family Membership Fee
The membership fee for Dunwoody Classes for 2009-2010 will be $75 per semester for one student or
$100 per semester for families with multiple students. The membership fee includes the facility fee and
unlimited choices of classes. Teacher registration and tuition are made payable separately to the
individual teachers. The membership fee is made payable to Becky Humphrey and must be paid before or
by the first day of class. This one membership fee and the teacher fees are the only fees that will be
assessed.
