Home Economics: Sewing

6th thru12th grade
Class length: 15 weeks              Class time: 90 minutes

This class will primarily be a hands-on class that will teach the basics for beginning sewing students.  
Each student will need access to a portable sewing machine, which they will bring to class each week,
and a sewing kit.

Sewing Kit:
Tape measure
Seam gauge
Pins
Grabbit or pincushion
Seam Ripper
Needles for hand sewing in medium to large sizes
1 knitting needle – size 8, 5mm. or larger
Small scissors for snipping and trimming
Dressmaker shears – NOTE: These must be purchased for either right or left hand operation
Marking tools: soap slivers for darker fabrics, water-soluble marking pen for lighter colored fabrics, or
small color-coded dots found at office supply stores

The book we will be using is Stitches & Pins: A Beginning Sewing Book for Girls, by JoAnn Gagnon and
Corrie Gagnon.

    Sewing Supplies
    Fabric
    Patterns, layout & cutting
    Pinning
    Sewing Fundamentals
    Machine Quilting
    Hand Sewing
    Facing
    And more

The sewing projects we will be making are:
    Pillowcase
    2 kinds of pot holders
    Apron
    Shirt and matching vest
    Night shirt
    A project of the student's choice, if time allows

The students will be given a supply list prior to the start of each new project.  They will be encouraged to
buy supplies that are to their liking, and that they will enjoy.

Tuition: $160 or $40 a month, due on the first of each month September thru December. Checks are to be
made out to Becky Humphrey. The membership fee must be paid in full before the first day of class, or the
student will not be allowed to attend class.

Family Membership Fee

The membership fee for Dunwoody Classes for 2009-2010 will be $75 per semester for one student or
$100 per semester for families with multiple students. The membership fee includes the facility fee and
unlimited choices of classes. Teacher registration and tuition are made payable separately to the
individual teachers. The membership fee is made payable to Becky Humphrey and must be paid before or
by the first day of class. This one membership fee and the teacher fees are the only fees that will be
assessed.
