High School Chemistry will meet Georgia’s High School Performance Standards:
Classifications of Matter
Atomic Theory/Configuration
Periodicity
Bonding/Nomenclature
Chemical Reactions
Law of Conservation of Matter
Empirical/Molecular Formulas
Stoichiometry
Kinetic Molecular Theory/Phase Changes
Gas Laws
Solutions/Concentrations
Acid/Base Chemistry
Based upon the very successful Friendly Chemistry model, which begins with atomic theory and quantum mechanics, High School Chemistry will give students a coherent, logical understanding of the subject. For example, students will learn how atomic structure relates to the behavior of elements and how the organization of the elements of the periodic table makes sense. The class will lean heavily upon labs and activities, and homework will include labs designed to be done at home. Students will keep a chemistry notebook.
Grades will be based upon labs, quizzes, a mid-term, and a comprehensive final exam.
Physical Science or Middle School Friendly Chemistry, plus completion of Algebra I are pre-requisites, and students must be 14 years or older to enroll. The class will be very active, and student evaluations will include feedback on their collaborative participation.
Text: Friendly Chemistry, Student Edition, 4th edition. Available from the publisher (www.friendlychemistry.com) or from www.Amazon.com. Students will not need to purchase manipulatives, as these will be provided.
Registration $60, non-refundable.
Tuition: $68 per month
