This class teaches “problem-solving-without-anxiety.” When I have taught this class to 6th-8th grade
students, we’ve had a lot of fun and we’ve exercised both sides of our brains in every meeting.
Kindness and courtesy are foundational for this lively class, because problem-solving demands a
willingness to take risks. Students will have direct instruction in solving different kinds of problems,
and they will work out solutions, sometimes as a group and sometimes individually. It is important to
give each student the tools to solve the problems, and it is important that every student feels secure
about offering a solution.
Subject areas will cross the curriculum from language arts, to mathematics, and to science. There will
be neither homework nor grades. Our emphasis will be on the pleasure of solving problems and
developing a zest for doing so.
If your 6th-8th grader would benefit from “noodling out solutions” in a risk-free environment, this class
is a satisfying place to start. Students may enroll for one or two semesters.
