Students will read from the classics as well as modern American authors. We will write a paper weekly
on topics coordinating with the literature. Students will gain experience in paragraph, essay, and
creative writing as well as writing poetry, reports, and research writing. There will be some in-class
writing to prepare the students for standardized testing. We will also have experience in note taking
and outlining. Mini-grammar lessons will be taught as the students’ writing assignments necessitate
them to be taught. Students will be well-prepared for standardized testing such as the SATs by the types
of writing and evaluation given as well as critical reading skills that are taught through the literature.
Mrs. Sparks has attended a class on how SAT writing essays are graded, and from that she encourages
students to write with “voice,” pertinent details, organized central themes, and mature vocabulary. The
students will have a brief vocabulary assignment from Sadlier-Oxford weekly.
The literature studies are the following:
The Scarlet Letter – Nathaniel Hawthorne
Excerpts from Jonathan Edward’s writings
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – Mark Twain
The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Old Man and the Sea – Earnest Hemingway
To Kill A Mockingbird – Nelle Harper Lee
Selected American Short Stories
