COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In the first part of the course we will study the founding principles of American government, relying in
large part on primary sources like John Locke’s Second Treatise of Government and The Federalist
Papers. In the second part, we will examine contemporary political institutions and processes in the
light of these founding principles. Topics covered will include Congress, the Presidency, the judicial
system, parties, elections, and the policy process. If time permits, we will examine some leading
Supreme Court decisions.
